Your bill, your business

A utility bill shows your name, your address, your account number, and when your family is home. We treat it that way. Here is exactly what happens to it.

Our data promise

  • We do not keep your bill. Honest Bill reads it during your audit and does not save it to any database or file. When your audit is done, our copy is gone.
  • Our AI provider deletes its copy within 30 days. We send your bill to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI, to read it. Anthropic’s business terms say it deletes what we send within 30 days. The only exceptions are if its safety systems flag an upload as breaking its usage rules, or if the law requires it to keep something.
  • Never sold. We do not sell, rent, or trade your bill or anything on it. Not to advertisers, not to energy companies, not to anyone.
  • Never used to train AI. Your bill is not used to train Honest Bill, Claude, or any other AI model.
  • Your results stay with you. We do not store your audit results. They live on your screen until you close the page, so save or print a copy.
  • What we do keep. Your payment record and your email, plus three small facts from your first bill so your free re-run works: your utility’s name, the bill date, and a scrambled version of your account number. Never your bill. Never your results.

What we collect

  • Your bill. The PDF or photos you upload, plus anything printed on them.
  • What you tell us. Your ZIP code, household size, and notes, if you choose to add them. These go along with your bill to help the audit and are handled the same way.
  • Payment details, when you pay. Card payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe tells us the payment went through, your email, and the amount.
  • Re-run details. After your first audit we save your utility’s name, your bill date, and your utility account number in scrambled form (a one-way “hash”). The scrambled number cannot be read back without our secret key, which only our server holds. It only lets us check that a re-run bill is from the same account and is newer than the first. These details are stored with your payment record at Stripe, not in a database of ours.
  • Your email, if you give it. We use it to send your receipt. If we ever add other emails, such as a re-run reminder, you can unsubscribe from them at any time.
  • Basic technical logs. Like most websites, our hosting company (Vercel) records things like the time of a visit, your browser type, and your IP address to keep the site running and secure. These logs do not contain your bill.

How we use it

Only to run your audit, take payment, send what you asked for, answer your questions, and keep Honest Bill safe and working. We do not build advertising profiles, and we do not use third-party ad trackers.

Who we share it with

Only the companies that help us run Honest Bill, and only what each one needs:

  • Anthropic reads your bill to produce the audit. Its commercial terms say it may not train its models on what we send.
  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • Stripe processes payments.
  • Brevo sends our emails, if you give us your email address.

We may also share information if the law requires it, such as a valid court order, or to protect someone from harm. If Honest Bill is ever sold or merged, this promise goes with it: the new owner must keep it or ask you first.

How long we keep things

  • Your bill and your notes: not kept by us. Deleted by Anthropic within 30 days, as described above.
  • Your audit results: not kept by us.
  • Payment records, including the re-run details above: kept so your free re-run works, and after that as long as tax and accounting law requires.
  • Your email: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.

Your choices

You can ask us what we have about you, ask us to fix it, or ask us to delete it. Email support@myhonestbill.com and we will answer within 30 days. Because we do not keep your bill or your results, there is usually nothing of that kind to delete. Depending on your state, you may have more rights under its privacy law, and we will honor them.

Keeping it safe

Your bill travels over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Our AI key and other secrets live only on our servers, never in your browser. No system is perfect, but not keeping your bill is the strongest protection we have.

Kids

Honest Bill is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes

If we change this page, we will update the date at the top. If a change makes the promise weaker, we will say so clearly on the site before it applies.
